One of the noticeable gaps in benefits with Medicare is dental, vision, and hearing coverage. Medicare does not cover routine exams, hearing aids, eyeglasses, or dentures. For many seniors age 65 and older, additional insurance is necessary to cover the costs for preventive visits and assistive devices.
Dental care impacts our overall wellbeing, and cleanings every six months allow for proper upkeep and prevention of gum disease. Many aging adults need yearly visits to assess their eyesight as degenerative conditions may come on quickly, and early diagnosis aids treatment. Hearing also gets weaker as we age, and hearing aids can be pricey in the range of $1500 per earpiece. Without coverage, you will be responsible for the full amount of your hearing services and products. Insurance will cover at least a portion of these expenses, which will ease the impact on your fixed income.
Most hearing, dental and vision coverage plans are better yet in that they do not have networks. Basic exams are covered immediately, and you can choose your own providers. These plans are often guaranteed renewable until age 85, meaning you keep the same coverage year after year as long as you pay your premiums.
Dental coverage typically includes routine dental cleanings as well as procedures such as cavity fillings, root canals and related dental procedures. Also covered are bridges, crowns, and dentures. Often this insurance can be used immediately, with no waiting periods for preventive or basic services. Vision plans cover routine eye exams or eye refraction, as well as eyeglasses and contact lenses. Some plans have coverage for cataract surgery or treatment for glaucoma. Hearing benefits cover hearing exams, hearing aids, and necessary repairs or supplies.
Many plans have a fixed cap of $1,000 to $1,500 in coverage per year.
